Understanding Australia's Points System
Australia's skilled migration program uses a points-based system to select immigrants who have the skills and attributes most needed in the Australian economy. You need a minimum of 65 points to be eligible, but higher scores significantly improve your chances of receiving an invitation.
How Points Are Calculated
Points are awarded for:
- Age (25-32 years: 30 points, 33-39: 25 points, 40-44: 15 points)
- English language proficiency (Competent: 0, Proficient: 10, Superior: 20)
- Skilled employment experience (outside Australia: up to 15 points, within Australia: up to 20 points)
- Educational qualifications (Doctorate: 20, Bachelor's: 15, Diploma: 10)
- Australian study requirement: 5 points
- Specialist education (STEM): 10 points
- Regional study: 5 points
- Community language: 5 points
- Partner skills: 5-10 points
- Single applicants: 10 points
Key Visa Subclasses
The main skilled visa subclasses are the 189 (Skilled Independent), 190 (Skilled Nominated), and 491 (Skilled Work Regional). Each has different requirements and benefits, with the 189 offering the most freedom as it doesn't require sponsorship.
“State nomination can add 5 points (subclass 190) or 15 points (subclass 491) to your score and is often the key to receiving an invitation. Research which states are nominating your occupation before applying.”
Maximizing Your Points Score
Strategic planning can make a significant difference. Consider improving your English test scores, gaining additional work experience, completing an Australian qualification, or learning a community language. Even a few extra points can be the difference between receiving an invitation and remaining in the pool.
