What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's primary immigration application management system, designed to process applications for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. Launched in 2015, it has become the most popular pathway for immigrants seeking to build a new life in Canada.
The system uses a points-based Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates against one another. Those with the highest scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence during regular draws from the pool.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for Express Entry, you must meet the minimum requirements for at least one of the three federal immigration programs managed through the system.
Federal Skilled Worker Program requirements:
- At least one year of continuous full-time work experience in a skilled occupation
- Language proficiency of CLB 7 in English or French
- A Canadian high school diploma or foreign equivalent with an Educational Credential Assessment
- Sufficient funds to support yourself and your family in Canada
How the CRS Score Works
The Comprehensive Ranking System assigns points across several factors. The maximum score is 1,200 points, broken down as follows: core human capital factors (up to 460 points), spouse factors (up to 40 points), skill transferability (up to 100 points), and additional points (up to 600 points).
“The minimum CRS score for Express Entry draws has been fluctuating between 480-530 points in recent rounds. However, category-based selection draws often have lower thresholds for candidates with specific skills or French language proficiency.”
Step-by-Step Application Process
Follow these steps to submit your Express Entry application:
- Determine your eligibility under one of the three programs
- Take an approved language test (IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF)
- Get your educational credentials assessed through an approved organization
- Create your Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool
- Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) if your CRS score is high enough
- Submit your complete application within 60 days of receiving the ITA
- Complete medical examinations and police clearances
- Receive your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)

Express Entry applications are typically processed within 6 months after submission of the complete application. The total cost includes the application fee ($1,325 CAD for the principal applicant), language testing ($200-300), educational assessment ($200-300), and medical examination ($100-300).
